Beverly Sommerville
Beverley Sommerville is a studio potter and ceramic artist. her focus is on wheel thrown forms inspired by her global travels and experiences of the land and cityscapes she inhabits.
One aspect of her ceramic practice engages with ideas of material, place and the nomadic. gathering materials from the cultures and places that inspire her and adding these into the clay that she works with. this body of work is known as matter
As a studio potter nomatter focuses on form, detail and the development of a coherent visual ceramic language. functional and tactile in nature, it exists to be held and used.
Whilst beverley’s ceramic practice is primarily based in the UK, she also works as a freelance interior designer for an international company. this work takes her around the world, travelling to many different countries.
These journeys have allowed her to discover the meaning of ‘place’. through experiencing such diverse cultures, ideas of transience and temporality have become integral parts of her work – to be rooted in the rootless, to be ‘nomadic’.
Her ceramic practice engages with material, place and nomad, as a reflection on, and a reaction to these nomadic journeys. materials, cultural philosophies and experiences are gathered, translating the places that inspire her into the made object. making tangible connections between place, memory and moments of time.
The continuous development of a palette of material, colour, texture and form, coalescing physical particles into unique clay bodies. permanently capturing the essence and experience of the place within the object itself – ‘material nomad’.
