Chris West creates wheel thrown stoneware that embraces elegant shapes and organic altered forms.

His altered forms are inspired by local landscapes. They begin as recognisable objects, large cylinders thrown on the wheel. Following this initial stage they undergo a transformation. Before they fully dry, they are altered in shape and embellished with additional materials. These include sculptural clay elements alongside other materials, such as sand. Finally, they are glazed with flowing colours that accentuate the different elements and marks on the piece. The process of creating these forms has itself evolved over the years, resulting in these latest pieces that possess an organic quality.

Chris’s work has featured in a number of exhibitions, most recently in Thrown Contemporary’s Winter Exhibition 25/26 and Tarpey Gallery (Castle Donington) where Chris was selected to participate in a group show later in 2026. He has also participated in ceramics fairs and many regional craft markets.

Chris designs and makes a range of contemporary ceramics. Each piece is wheel-thrown, glazed and fired in his home studio. Chris also makes a range of contemporary tableware alongside other functional and decorative ceramics.
