Hazel Tomlinson is a ceramicist and educator whose practice sits between functional pottery, sculptural form, and performance-led making. Working primarily with stoneware, Hazel is interested in the quiet dialogue between utility, tactility, and embodied process, creating objects that invite daily use while retaining clear evidence of the hand.
Alongside functional work, her practice is informed by a background in conceptual and performance art, using clay as a responsive material through which actions, gestures, and durations are recorded. These performative processes leave traces within the final pieces, allowing the clay to act as both material and document of the act of making.
Her work is shaped by an ongoing engagement with traditional and experimental firing processes- such as pit firing-, glaze chemistry, and natural materials, alongside a deep respect for clay as both a historical and living medium. Influences range from vernacular pottery traditions to architectural and sculptural thinking, grounded in attentiveness, care, and material presence.
Alongside studio practice, Hazel has several years of experience teaching ceramics, viewing education as a reciprocal and process-led exchange that mirrors their approach to making.
