Joe Small Ceramics
2026 – Taking part in Potfest in the City- Glasgow
Joe Small produces high-fired stoneware and porcelain utilising glazes that incorporate locally sourced clays, ground rocks and wood ashes. Joe is a retired geochemist and his scientific background is reflected in his interests in Oriental reduction fired glazes.
Joe makes thrown, extruded and press moulded forms. His work is mainly decorated with clay slips and textured surfaces that enhance his glazes. Most of his equipment is self-built including his gas kiln and a ball mill to grind granite and other glaze materials.
Recently, Joe has produced a range of thrown and hand built screw threaded vessels, inspired by works of Michael Cardew and co-workers using a “Potters Tap & Die”. Such tools are no longer available but Joe has recreated the technique using 3D printed versions, which he has designed himself.
