Karen Gittins – Endless Potterbilities

From mugs and bowls, to tiles and sculptures, with clay the possibilities really are endless.

Using a combination of techniques including throwing on the potters wheel, hand building and slip casting, I aim to create pots that are practical and a pleasure to use.

For thousands of years humans have fashioned pots using the ancient skills of hand-building and throwing. Pots are ubiquitous and essential, a global language that transcends boundaries and all humanity is inextricably linked by its need for the vessel.

I visualise my work as carrying on this ceramic continuum from all the potters who have gone before, as I make vessels that contain and hold. The hands of the maker are replaced by the hands of the user, the pot a link between the two. The idea of function is essential to my practice. I want to make pottery you will want to use and will enjoy, that you will find pleasure in on a daily basis.

My domestic ware is designed to be good to hold, it is tactile, comfortable and familiar, your favourite mug, or the plate you choose to eat lunch from.

Allowance must be made for the individuality of studio pottery as each piece is unique.

Lovingly hand crafted from stoneware clay each piece is hand finished and high fired in a kiln, resilient and prepared for the rigours of everyday life.

Available to buy as a set or as separate pieces, you can collect and replace as you choose, giving flexibility according to need, space and budget.
