Moyra Stewart
2024 – Taking part in Potfest Scotland – Scone Palace
Moyra is an award winning potter who has worked with clay for more than forty years in the UK and Canada. Originally working in porcelain and stoneware she started working in colored Raku after doing a workshop in Victoria B.C in 1990. In 2005 she thought she would try “slip resist” Raku and when the first results were electrifying she persevered. Despite many failures her obsession with this elusive technique grew and her resulting work in Naked Raku is unique.
She is inspired by the contradictions found in nature where the simplest of forms can hold the most complex patterns : the geology of rock : the patterns of shifting tidal sands.
She says ” strive to make shapes that have that organic essence and patterns that seem to be a natural part of the whole. This process of Naked Raku is intensive, challenging and extreme. But it has this magnetic quality that draws people in and makes them need to touch the soft, almost sensual, smooth warm surface. I watch people respond to this in the same way I still do, it’s mesmerizing !”
