From her cozy studio in Northampton, Marika du Plessis brings to life her enchanting Quirky Birds, beloved for their whimsical personalities and captivating charm. Each bird exudes a unique character, expressed through its distinctive stance, facial expression, and fine, elegant eyelashes. Rendered in serene teal and blue hues, these creations evoke a sense of calm, inner healing, and a joyful celebration of life.
People are drawn to the intricate details of these feathered friends, from their delicate wings and tails to their sphere-like forms. Marika infuses her work with textures and patterns created using antique lace and embossed fabrics—materials rich with history, often sourced from vintage markets or lovingly passed down from her florist mother.

Beyond her signature birds, Marika crafts other organic-inspired ceramic pieces, including chunky, coil-built vessels and playful toadstools. Her work is imbued with symbolism and carries a message of joy and encouragement, aiming to touch hearts and bring warmth to collectors.

Each stoneware piece is meticulously handcrafted, painted with layers of oxides, and finished with carefully chosen underglazes and glazes. Marika dedicates countless hours in her studio to refining intricate details, mark-making, and textures using wooden tools. Her pieces often juxtapose glossy glaze with matte finishes, adding depth and contrast to the final design.
